Welcome to Sunday Night Tunes. Been away the last few days, spending them with my elderly parents. Toward the end of last year, 2013, it was my father who had medical issues. Now, it is my mother. Been there both times to help out as much as possible and boy do I grow nostalgic for times past. Love to be with them. Tonight’s opening song, Afternoon Delight by Starland Vocal Band, takes me back one of my best years, 1976, made possible partly due to my parents. This particular song was a hit that summer, the summer of the Spirit of ’76, the Nation’s Birthday. Splashed everywhere were the colors of red, white and blue, especially on the 4th of July. On the radio, this delicious tune playing as the skyrockets were in flight that night. That year, my parents took us everywhere and anywhere having to do with the Spirit of ’76, at the same time, we discovered new places and celebrated our beloved freedom. This song was such a big part of the era and so much part of my parents since they constantly played and sang it–I’m certain to each other. What did I know? I was just a very innocent kid in those days. 🙂 Anyway, the rest of tonight’s tunes are a big part of that year and my folks. Tonight’s for you, papi and mami. Hope you enjoy.
